nickd: Charge money for your work. Don't be a jerk... →
Go read that then come back. It’s short, just do it.
The topic of charging money to users who love your products has been on my mind a lot lately. By putting your product cart before your business plan horse, you’re basically leaving yourself two options: force ads on your users/sell user data to advertisers or force previously non-paying customers to pay.
I’m not saying that venture capital...

marco:
noun
informal derogatory: a term used to describe people who bought a product that competes with the one you bought, which is probably more popular than your choice, for reasons that you wish to discredit or diminish because you’re secretly afraid or upset that you made the wrong choice.
ORIGIN from fan + boy.
I’m glad the Dogfish Head World Wide Stout inspired this post.
Skyhook Wireless on Android’s Openness →
Gruber:
Put another way, there is something called “Android” that truly is open source, in the “take this and do what you want with it under this standard open source license” way. But that “Android” doesn’t include all sorts of things that we, as users, think of as being part of Android — things like Google Maps, Gmail, Android Market, etc. None of those things are open in any sense of the...

Color Picker app for Mac →

Click to download an AppleScript I wrote to turn the OS X color picker into a standalone app. It even has a nice icon.
Alternatively, you can write this app yourself by putting
choose color
in an applescript and saving it.
Also of note: Hex Color Picker x waffle software. Assign to a QuickSilver hotkey and access it anytime...
The Real Problem With Dick’s Bar →
Justin Williams lays out a nice summary of recent complaints about the #dickbar saga.
He nails it at the end, and I hope this is in Twitter’s roadmap: geographic “local” does nothing to make me want to look at trends; put trending topics from users I follow (and who they follow) and it would be much more useful. Not that I don’t love seeing about ChrisBrownFAMEAlbum or JonasReunion.
And be...

I'm Comic Sans, asshole. →
Well think again, nerdhole, because I’m Comic Sans, and I’m the best thing to happen to typography since Johannes fucking Gutenberg.
Comic Sans responds to the haters.

A much-needed update and recognition from the Tumblr team. More communication like this would go a long way towards putting customers at ease (and, of course, continuing to make...

9-bits:
There is a certain niche of web developers that work on a Mac, code in Textmate, and have a rising interest in iPhone development and web standards — for this group, I can not recommend this new Tumblog by David DeSandro enough. I’ve already picked up several fantastic tips.
This is an amazing wealth of knowledge. Definitely worth following.

Most common words unique to 1-star and 5-star App... →
marco:
I wrote a script to crawl U.S. App Store customer reviews for the top 100 apps from every category (minus duplicates) and compute the most common words in 1-star and 5-star reviews, excluding words that were also common in 3-star reviews.
Interesting work by Marco. (But what isn’t?)

David Baron's weblog: calc() →
I’ve been working on adding support for the calc() proposal that’s in CSS3 Values and Units. I’ve now added support for -moz-calc(), -moz-min(), and -moz-max() functions to a significant number of properties. (Note that min() and max() do not have -moz- prefixes when they’re inside an expression, but they do have prefixes when they’re the top-level expression.)
Support for calc() allows...

1Password 3.3.0 →
Now Dropbox syncing for 1Password not only keeps your Macs in sync, but will do the same for iOS devices.
I love apps using Dropbox to handle their cloud syncing for them. It’s basically what MobileMe should have been (and used to try to be, though I think they’ve given up that charade).
